Yilhyung Chyung & Taeyoung Lee Memorial Foundation
Dr. Yilhyung Chyung (1904~1982) and Dr. Taeyoung Lee (1914~1998) are well-known social activists who have devoted their lives to democratize Korea from 1940s to 1980s. Dr. Yilhyung Chyung, former Foreign Minister and assemblyman of Democratic Party, sacrificed himself for improvement of democracy and human rights in Korea. Dr. Taeyoung Lee, the first female lawyer of Korea, devoted her life to fight for women¡¯s rights in Korea. Until today, Dr. Yilhyung Chyung and Dr. Taeyoung Lee are remembered forefathers of modern Korean history.
Yilhyung Chyung & Taeyoung Lee Memorial Foundation was founded in 1989 to help the people in need, especially teenage students in need of education and financial support. Currently, Korean government provides education only up to middle school (ñé3) and still, there are many teenagers who suffer to continue their education. Each year, scholarship candidates and their parents go through intensive evaluation of our board members so that our scholarship will not be wrongfully used in any way.
Another objective of our foundation is to encourage improvement and reformation of democracy and social service in Korea. Depending on the government holding power, the Korean society¡¯s level of democracy tends to waver from time to time. We find it our duty to find truly good-hearted people who continuously devote themselves for the settlement of democracy in Korean society. Our board consists of former assemblymen and professors of diverse fields of knowledge; candidates for the Democratic Unification Award are carefully examined and selected through profound research and discussion.
Yilhyung Chyung & Taeyoung Lee Memorial Foundation is now run by Dr. Yilhyung Chyung and Dr. Taeyoung Lee¡¯s grandson, Hojoon Chyung, and eight board members. Each of these board members is trying their best to succeed Dr. Yilhyung Chyung and Dr. Taeyoung Lee¡¯s spirit to our generation today. We believe that there is much to be learned from our predecessors to leave a brighter future for the next generation.
It is great honor for us to have this opportunity to receive your kind support. Your assistance will definitely make a difference in each of these students¡¯ lives and make Korea an equally hopeful place for everyone.
Thank you.
