> > > Yilhyung Chyung & Taeyoung Lee Memorial Foundation > > > Dr. Yil-Hyung Chyung (1904-1982) and Dr. Tai-Young Lee (1914-1998) were well-known activists who devoted their lives to the democratization of Korea from the 1930s to the 1980s. Dr. Chyung, former Foreign Minister and National Assemblyman of the Democratic Party, gave himself to the improvement of democracy and human rights in Korea. Dr. Lee, the first woman lawyer of Korea, devoted her life to fight for women¡¯s rights in Korea. Even today both Dr. Chyung and Dr. Lee are remembered as great pioneers of modern Korean history. > The Yil-Hyung Chyung and Tai-Young Lee Memorial Foundation was founded in 1989 to help people in difficulties, especially teenage students in need of education and financial support. Currently the Korean government provides education only through middle school (grade 9), and thus there are many teenagers who encounter hardships in order to continue their education. Each year scholarship candidates and their parents go through intensive evaluation by our board members so that our scholarships will not be wrongly used in any way. > Another objective of the foundation is to encourage the improvement and reformation of democracy and social service in Korea. Depending on the government in power, the Korean society¡¯s level of democracy tends to waver. We find it our duty to locate truly good-hearted people who will continuously devote themselves to the cause of democracy in Korea. Our board consists of former assemblymen and professors in diverse fields of knowledge. Candidates for the foundation¡¯s Freedom & Democracy Award (í»ë¦ÚÅñ«ßÛ) are closely examined and selected through careful research and discussion. > Dr. Chyung and Dr. Lee¡¯s grandson, Hojoon Chyung, and eight board members now run the Foundation. All of these board members do their best to follow in and pass on the spirit of Drs. Chyung and Lee to our generation today. We believe that there is much to be learned from our predecessors, like Drs. Chyung and Lee, in order to provide for a brighter future for the generations to come. > It is a great honor for us to have this opportunity to request your kind support. Your assistance will definitely make a difference in the lives of many students as it will also help make Korea a place of hope for everyone. > Objective > > > 1) Annual Freedom & Democracy Award (í»ë¦ÚÅñ«ßÛ) ceremony > > > On April 23 every year, our foundation holds annual Freedom & Democracy Award (í»ë¦ÚÅñ«ßÛ) ceremony to honor the memory of Dr. Yilhyung Chyung and Dr. Taeyoung Lee. Our board members gather at the beginning of each year to discuss and select an individual or group who has devoted their time and effort to advance Korean democracy and social service. > > • Total expense of the annual ceremony : > - Ceremony preparation 20,000,000 won > (including auditorium rental, flower decoration, > refreshments, photographer, etc.) > - Prizes : Democratic Unification department 5,000,000 won > Social Service department 5,000,000 won > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Total 30,000,000 won > > > 2) Publication of biographies and online PR : > > > • Total expense of online operation 5,000,000 won > (www.chyunglee.com) > • Total expense of publication 15,000,000 won > (Theses, book publication, broadcasting, etc.) > > > > 3) Scholarship program > > Every year, our foundation helps students in need of financial support for their education. Candidates are examined and interviewed along with their parent or parents by our board members to ensure that the scholarship is not wrongfully used. Considering that the tuition fee of public high school education is around 500,000 won each semester, each of the students receives 1,000,000 won on April 23. > > • Total expense of scholarship program 30,000,000 won > > > 4) Annual lecture program > > In order to look back in respect, our foundation selects a lecturer each year to share his or her memories of Dr. Yilhyung Chyung and Dr. Taeyoung Lee. This event is to honor Dr. Yilhyung Chyung and Dr. Taeyoung Lee¡¯s achievements and contributions in modern Korean history. > > • Total expense of lecture program 10,000,000 won > > > Objective Expected expense > Annual ceremony preparation 20,000,000 won > Prizes 10,000,000 won > Publication 15,000,000 won > Online operation 5,000,000 won > Scholarship program 30,000,000 won > Lecture program 10,000,000 won > Statue manufacturing 20,000,000 won > Total 110,000,000 won > Dr. Ilhyung Chyung (ÐÞæÐ ï÷ìéúû) > > > 1904.2.23 Born in Pyongnam, Je Island > 1927 Graduated from Yonsei University (Liberal Arts B.A.) > 1935 Graduated from Drew University, U.S. > (Sociology M.A., Philosophy Ph.
